Stories

Earliest Archives from the Zimmerman Family Museum. “Devin and his Humongous Mustache,” Hearst Elementary c. mid-2000s. Some archaeologists claim to have heard whispers of legendary chronicles involving the author’s stuffed animals. Historians still ponder how his handwriting has somehow worsened with age.

“What Grandma Says, Goes”

Below are some stories I started writing in February, 2023. Some of them are further along than others, but none of them are quite done. I used to refer to these stories as ‘children’s stories.’ I have since learned, however, that while of the style of children’s stories, these stories are most relevant to an older audience, young adults like myself in particular. I have been writing here and there since I was a youngin (as pictured above.) If I had my way and brought forth all that I think I have to offer, I would like to be an excellent storyteller. My Grandmother Hillary is the first person that comes to mind when I think of stories. She used to tell my sister and I bedtime stories every time we’d sleep over at their house. They’d range from coyotes and gardening hoses to funny mishaps on my Mom’s way to and from school. Not all of them would have morals or life lessons but my sister and I were captivated by them all. The stories below, “Pat the Penguin Astronaut” in particular, have morals I think are best taught by Grandmas and I hope one day I can tell them as good as they do too.

Thank you Hill-dawg for all the stories, laughs, and inspiration.

————————————————Surf

Surfing is hard to write about. I have a lot of opinions about surfing, most of which are hypocritical, but that’s not what interests me most when it comes to writing about surfing. Instead, I would like to write good, solid stories that might have some surfing in them. Or in the case of my story, “Midnight Special,” stories about experiences and times when I’ve learned something in the water.

It seems discovering new surf breaks and scoring empty ones is at the heart of many, if not all, classic surf films (and occupies many a devoted surfers dreams and aspirations.) However, in documenting and sharing these absolutely soul-satisfying moments, people—whether it be the surfer, the filmer, the brand, or all of the above—seem to milk and expose the sacredness of these locations (generally) for their own benefit. So what is there to do about the core of surf media being almost the antithesis of core surfing?

That is a big question. I am only 5’8 and 3/4. And although I’d like to elaborate on both the types of stories I plan to write within these core confines and my stories in progress that already do so, I’d rather not give too much away. Stay tuned foos. Thank you for reading this far. And my deepest condolences to any lapses in my surf etiquette I may have exhibited towards you.
